In Of Mice and Men the main characters, Lennie and George, are unfortunate and have poor qualities of life because they do not have much money, and do not know people who can guide them into better situations. George and Lennie are unsuccessful because they are simply ranchers who work for another man, they don’t do the work to make money for themselves (Steinbeck 6). I am the youngest out of my siblings and I am the last one left to graduate in my family. Being the youngest, my parents and my siblings always were looking out for me and concerned me which made me also want to do the same for others I care about. Miami has an exclusive type of living which makes it very unique due to a lot of the Hispanics that live there. My parents are from Dominican Republic which plays a big role on my hobbies and things I enjoy to see and do. The culture my parents have brought from their home has affected me in many ways. Playing baseball and eating Dominican food has always been something I enjoyed and it made me appreciate the cultures and traditions of other foreign places. Since elementary, I have been living in a community where the majority of the residents have been Hispanic or Latino so a lot of my culture and traditions are based of my childhood not only from being in a Dominican house hold, but also having a Venezuelan Best friend influenced a lot on what I eat and even some of his country’s slang. Throughout public schools in my neighborhood, like the local elementary to high school, is where I met the majority of my friends. Even now many of my friends that I knew when I was little are still in contact with me after high school. Since I always stayed in the same part of Miami called â€Å"Doral,† I became very social with the people I met who lived there and went to the same school as me. Miami was divided into different portions and Doral was one of the biggest in population and it is where I grew up. I also participated in many extracurricular activities and hobbies throughout high school. But out of all the sports I did, basketball was the main sport. My senior year I received various achievement’s like being a city All Star and one of the top scorers in South Florida. Working in my family radio station help build some of my strongest skills like my customer service skills and being organized and learning how to use different programs on the computer. It helped a lot when it came to applying for jobs. Working around many famous artists in the radio station helped decide what my future career would be. Being a very indecisive person, it took me while to finally figure out what I wanted to do as a career when I graduated college. At first basketball was one of my biggest priorities, but working around my dad and the way he managed the company made me realize I wanted to be a manager of a new company. Watching my dad become a leader in his career inspired me to be more responsible and more cooperative in my job. I enjoy music a lot on my free time and like to listen to a lot of different varieties of music. I am planning to be a manager for artists and help bring upcoming artists to the radio station and get them exposed to the public. Not only do recording managers earn a lot of money but they also help people who are underrated and have no one to help them. The institution of the feud among the Nuer as analyzed by Evans Pritchard, is settled by a special person known as a â€Å"leopard skin chief†. A â€Å"leopard skin chief†, has ritual powers that deal with the Nuer social life and nature, including the power to bless and curse. Only certain lineages have â€Å"leopard skin chiefs† and not all lineages use their ritual powers. His function is political affairs between political groups which are regulated through him, but he is not a political authority controlling them. For example, when a man has committed murder, he must go to a chief, who cuts his arm so that blood may flow. Until the mark of Cain has been made, the slayer can’t eat or drink. If he fears infliction of punishment, which usually always happens, he stays at the chief’s home. Within some weeks the chief will bring forth from the slayers kin that they are prepared to pay compensation to avoid a feud and he persuades the dead man’s kin to accept the payment. During that time neither family (group) can eat nor drink from the same vessels as the other. The chief collects the cattle; forty to fifty cattle. The cattle is then taken to the dead mans home, where sacrifices of penitence and cleansing take place. This is the process of settling a feud. He does not judge the case because he does not have the authority to do so. The â€Å"leopard skin chief†, forces the kin of the dead to accept with the compensation if they are not willing to he will threatened to curse them. The moral settlement on both sides helps avoid further aggression from the incident. Evans Pritchard believes that we must recognize that feuds are settled more easily in smaller groups. Such as when a man kills a near kinsmen or a close neighbor, the issue is easily settled by compensation. When a homicide occurs within a village general opinion demands an early settlement. When a homicide occurs between primary or secondary sections of a tribe, there is a small chance of an early settlement and also because of distance retaliation is not taken as quickly, so the unsettled feuds build up. Such homicides are usually the result of intertribal fights in which several people are killed. This not only makes the settlement more difficult, but continues tension between the two groups to fight, in which their groups of people become involved. The kinsmen of a dead man are close enough to try to fight a kinsmen of the slayer and far enough from them to allow a temporary problems between the local communities to where they belong. However, their members are, as a rule, closely related by family ties must assist them if there is an open fight. The feud takes on a political feature and expresses the hostility between political segments. Evans Pritchard believed that the balanced hostility of political segments is maintained by the institution of the feud which permits a state of latent hostility between local communities, but allows them to form a larger group. He says that hostility is latent because even when a feud is being acted against there is no attempt to exact punishment, but the kinsmen of the dead may take any opportunity that presents itself to accomplish their purpose; and, also, because even when compensation has been accepted the feud may, in spite of settlement, start up again. The â€Å"leopard-skin chief† does not rule or judge, but acts as mediator through communities wanting to end a feud or make peace. The feud, including the role played in it by the chief, is a way by which the political structure maintains itself in the form known to America. â€Å"The leopard-skin chief† may also act as mediator in disputes concerning ownership of cattle, and he and the people on both sides may express their opinion on the case. But the chief does not have the authority to force obedience. All he can do is go with the plaintiff and some people of his community to the home of the defendant and to ask him and his kinsmen to discuss the matter. That’s only if both sides are willing to handle the situation in a civilized manner. Also, although the chief, after a meeting with the people, can give a decision, his decision is finalized by agreement of the people   Ã‚  Ã‚   The Nuer doesn’t have a law. There is no enforcement of governmental power. There are payments considered to someone who has suffered certain harm such as adultery, theft, murder, and fornication. There is no constituted or impartial authority who decides on the rights and wrongs of a dispute. In the Nuer community, if a person has been done wrong by another, they will receive support from there kinsmen and they are prepared to take matters in their own hands, especially, if they live near one another. The usual way of obtaining ones due is to go to the debtors and take his cattle. If the person who owes refuses to go along ith the repayment it could turn into a feud until the point someone could be harmed. How and whether a dispute is settled depends mostly on the people concerned in the kinship and age-set systems and the distance between their communities (tribes). Since the Nuer doesn’t have a government or law. The â€Å"leopard- skin chief† is not a political authority, the â€Å"Man of the Cattle†, totemic specialists, rain-makers , magicians, diviners and others. They have no political function or status, not saying to some people they may be important and feared. The heads of joint families, especially when they are rich in cattle, and have strong qualities seem to uphold importance but like all the other statues they have no power over another. With that being said, every Nuer basically regulates their affairs as they please. No Nuer who has natural gifts or not can be said to have political power or represent it. No local groups, apart from the prophets can be said to symbolize, or represent importance in the community. As Evans Pritchard argued institution of the feud among the Nuer played a necessary role in the segmentary political system of the tribe. As he described and analyzed in the section of the Nuer called â€Å"Political Systems†. He talked about the intertribal relations and the relations between tribal segments. After working odd jobs for ten years, Mr. Panetta used personal savings and a loan from a family member to purchase a variety store. He always dreamed of starting a family business. Panetta eventually sold the variety store and purchased, renovated, and renamed a drive-thru restaurant. A second location was added shortly thereafter. Both sons skipped college to help Panetta run the restaurants. Sales were good and customers returned for the good food and good price. Mr. Panetta’s brainchild food item, The Cosmobob, was praised by patrons of both locations, so he began preparing for mass-market introduction and development. Cosmo was faced with a number of decisions concerning producing The Cosmobob. There was an opportunity to open a third restaurant in the Niagara Falls business district, purchase or rent a new production facility for the Cosmobob, introduce the product on a provincial or national level, and whether to distribute through a food wholesaler or supermarket chains. Cosmo’s restaurants are famous for the Cosmobob. In 1998, the Cosmobob accounted for almost 35% of the Thorold location sales and 30% of the Lundy Lane location sales. Canadian Food Market The Canadian food market is a $37.8 billion dollar a year industry which consists of the food service market and retail grocery stores. The food service market includes all meals eaten away from home in schools, hospitals, prisons, nursing homes, hotels, and restaurants. Canadians on average ate 38% of their meals away from home in 1996. Hotels and restaurants serve 960 million meals a year; however, this is a small portion, only 8% of the total food service market. On the other hand, fast food service accounted for 80% of the 960 million meals, totaling 768 million. Within the food market, there are four basic types of food service systems used for delivering entrà ©es: Conventional system, where all food is purchased raw and processed on premises. The Semi-conventional food system; which provided frozen pre-cut meats. Marketing Strategy Mr. Panetta is undecided between two marketing strategies to promote and sell the Cosmobob. Either he can enter into the food service market or distribute through supermarket chains. Distributing through a food wholesaler would require permanently adding pita bread and Cosmo sauce to his offering. Grocery store chains were a larger market than food service; however, the cost would also be substantially higher. Cosmo knew there were no existing â€Å"ready to serve† souvlaki available to the home user. Serca Foods Serca Foods, a national food wholesaler, was interested in carrying the Cosmobob. They would require a 20% margin on the products purchased. Meaning for every Cosmobob case sold at $60, Serca Foods would receive $12. With Serca being a national wholesaler a federal inspection would be necessary for products to be sold in multiple providences. Cosmo would not have to personally worry about the selling and promoting of his product to the food service market. Small restaurants and hotels liked the convenience of ordering from only one wholesaler, and if only Serca offered the Cosmobob that gave them the opportunity to gain new accounts. Supermarket Chains Federal inspection would be necessary if the Cosmobob was introduced nationally in a supermarket chain. Distributing to the home user would be beneficial to those with large families that could not afford to eat away from home often, and also appeal to people who liked to have comfort food at home. Supermarket chains would expect a 25% margin on the retail selling price, good promotional support, and guaranteed delivery. The delivery to national supermarkets would be an additional cost for Mr. Panetta to consider. Mr. Panetta and his son were the only two conducting sales and demonstration of the product. With the promotional expectations of the supermarket chain, he would need to hire another salesperson in order to meet the demands. There is a $20,000 placement fee per product, per supermarket chain; in addition to samples, free food allowances, advertising, and trade promotion. Production Facility Options The facility space being utilized for production has reached its capacity. Recommendations After conducting a full analysis of Mr. Panetta’s product and the market, we recommend that he pursue a new business opportunity and open a new location in the Victoria Mall. Although the requirement to lease the site is for a minimum of 20 years, with rent exceeding $384,000, there is potential to reach many customers on a daily basis. Sales projected on 60% average of the Thorold location is expected to produce a $10,000 net income within the first year and has the potential to reach Thorold location sales in two years. Opening this new site would require a larger facility in order to mass produce the Cosmobob. The old dairy plant location in Niagara Falls would be the best option. Not only would it allow him to use the same employees, but the capital required to have the plant operational is less expensive. $70,000 would be required upfront compared to $160,000 in improvements and inspections for the alternative location. There is a $296,800 difference in cost to lease the old dairy plant compared to purchase. The lease option is less and it provides the option to discontinue the lease agreement after 3 years if he determines that his net profit is not meeting the company’s expectations. To market the Cosmobob through Serca Foods would be beneficial. There are several indications leading to the supposition that the general form of the government is a socialist one, e.g. the teenage slang called Nadsat which handles chiefly Russian vocabulary, streets named after personalities like Yuri Gagarin and paintings of nude working men in the style of Russian socialist art. So the state is on the say to become totalitarian, after the example of many communist countries.    In addition Alex lives in a society which lacks individualism and opposition. Psycological View of the Movie Groundhog Day

The objective of this paper is to explain the psychological view of the movie, Groundhog Day. The main character of the film is Bill Murray and is directed by Harold Ramis and released in 1993. The movie takes place in the small town of Punxsatawney during the winter season. Although the movie has a very powerful message, I did not like it. Phil (Bill Murray), a weather man for an American TV station, is sent to Punxsatawney to cover a local Groundhog Day ceremony. The very skeptical weatherman regretfully accepts the assignment and travel to the town.Once he makes his report he proceeds to his hotel and goes to bed looking forward to returning home the next day. In an effort to leave the town and any memories relating to the town the weatherman is forced to stay another night due to a snowstorm. After awakening the next morning Phil realizes that it is still Groundhog Day, again and again. After living one day over and over again, Phil meets two drunken guys at a bar. These two guys enlighten Phil on the idea that living the same day over and over would give him a chance to do all the things he ever wanted to do without any consequences.After days of appalling behavior, Phil finally realizes that even those acts will not take away the terrible reality that he seems to never progress in life. He then tries to kill himself, which does not work either. A dramatic twist in the movie happens during a recurring report. The name of the groundhog (Phil), carved in wood, appeared directly about Phil’s, the weatherman, head. This scene seemed to be showing the fact that the weatherman is living a shadow of himself just as the groundhog. The shadow is a way for Phil to see himself a hopefully make a difference.These recurring events bring upon love for Phil and his anchor lady, Rita. He eventually tells her about the returning life events and they decide that she would spend the entire day with him to be an â€Å"objective witness†. They fall asleep in bed together; however, the next morning he awakens, it’s still Groundhog Day and Rita is not in bed with him. Beginning to accept the negativity of his life, Phil begins to turn his negative aspects into more positive ones. After accepting his imperfections, Phil was now able to use his imprisoned energy to find a new strength (care and compassion).He also learns that humans are privileged to be able to improve themselves. The valuable moral of this movie is the journey to awareness. Phil being aware of his imperfections allowed for him to change his behavior, thus move on into a new and more beautiful day. The chapter I think best fits this film is Chapter 10 – Personality. Personality is the complex characteristics that define a person. According to Sigmund Freud, each person has a certain amount of psychological energy that develops into three structures of personality (the id, the ego, and the superego).The id is unconscious and present at birth and come from two insti nctual drives: the life instinct and the death instinct. After discovering his recurring life events, Phil decides to live life to its fullest potential by doing whatever he wanted with the aspect of never having to face any consequences. A while after realizing that his bad actions were getting him no where he decides to try and end his life with numerous attempts including jumping off a tall building. These acts were driven by the pleasure principle which is the motive to obtain pleasure and avoid tension or discomfort.The ego is party conscious and regulates thoughts and behavior and is most in tune with the demands of the external world. Phil finds ways to satisfy whatever desires he wanted in life. For example, he did not want to be bothered by the insurance agent so he gave the guy and uncomfortable hug to run him away. Another example of Phil’s ego is how he used his knowledge of recurring events to make Rita fall for him. The superego is also partly conscious; however , it’s the internal, parental voice that helps one decipher right from wrong. Superego is more vastly known as your conscience.Phil’s superego kicks in when he realizes that being self centered was helping him to progress in life. A Humorous Incident in My Life

When I was 7 years old my mother and I were grocery shopping when we passed a lady in one of the aisles and she began talking to my mother. They were so much engrossed with the talk to the extent that I did sleep off while standing, patiently waiting for the seemingly unending conversation.Suddenly I woke up in a nearby hospital surrounded by a doctor and other medical personnel. I asked everyone of my mom’s where about. Whispering softly – mother! Mother! Mother! No one cares to listen to me though I knew I was really conscious.I overheard the doctor phoning the attention of the nearest attendance van at a psychiatry centre. Effort to explain the myself was subsided by an intimidating team of medical practitioners. I kept mute for the whole of physical and consciousness examination taken by the leader of the team. The bruise on my head was diagnosed as a result of a fatal trauma to the skull following a ghastly collision with a racing vehicle. I could see the gorging b lood but I apparently felt little pain.Then I began to sense I was in a strange world.   A world with little pain, huge care around but the strangeness wickedly abducts my mother and her old friend who she was earlier conversing with. Meanwhile, the fear of the unknown enveloped my whole, thinking I may die the next few minutes if the bleeding continues.Suddenly I felt a jerky touch from behind. I woke into the noisy market down town. Oh! What a scary adventure in a broad day light. I could not imagine I slept on standing at road side waiting for the brief reunion of oldies. In addition, the gory dream almost made me believe I escaped the rapture. I could not really disclose to anyone what happened within the short while I waited.All this while, mother was pleasant during their conversation, but not real out going as she usually is. Then after the lady left, I ask my mother who the lady was to have taken then such a lengthened time of discussion. She told me she could not remember her name, but she remembers her from a Parent Teacher Association meeting at my elementary school.  At the meeting, several of the parents wanted to have fund raisers to help out with some of the expenses at my school which was beyond the calculation of tuition and miscellaneous fees. My mom remembers that this lady said she did not have time to do things like this.My mom said that she understands that all parents are busy – but if several parents work together a lot could be accomplished. During the school year the lady would never help with any project or fundraising activities and my mom said that she did not think that was very nice of her.Well, at check out we saw the lady again standing in line and I walked up to her and spilled my guts about what my mom had said. Needless to say there were several other people standing around when I told her my mom could not remember her name and how she was not a very nice lady. My mom wanted to disappear as people began to snicker which in turn made me spill my guts even more.It was really a wonderful but hilarious incident I bet I would never forget in my life. And I pray I live to keep sharing it with folks and friends.
